Big Man's Blogging Blunder

This morning in our weekly all staff meeting the "big man" asked if any of us "blog." I know for a fact that at least 10 people I work with blog, but we all hung our heads in shame. It was a moment reminiscent of those in a class when the teacher asks a question and no one knows the answer. He went around the room asking everyone "do you blog?" and one by one people said "no." Before he got to me he stopped and said, "this is awful. No one here reads blogs? I read blogs." We all starting laughing. Of course we READ blogs, we thought he was asking if we HAVE a blog.

This whole portion of the meeting made me laugh. A boss demanding that his workers read blogs?? This man is quite clearly from another generation. Asking a large group of 20-somethings to read a blog is like asking a fat person to eat at McDonalds – they're going to get carried away. That being said, I'm considering this a permission slip to surf the blog world as regularly as possible.

The meeting also made me wonder. If blogging is so popular, why are people so embarrassed to admit that they do it?? What are we afraid of??

  • I readily admit that I read them, but I don't so readily admit that I have one (to my office mates). The last thing you want is to discover that someone you work with has been reading all your very personal stories.

  • I agree with rhinestone cowgirl. There is no way I want someone I "know" reading stuff about my personal life. For some reason, I can tell complete strangers about the crappy times I've been having and not give it a second thought. However, I don't want my co-workers or boss or neighbor or even best friend knowing (all of)the same problems.

I think this a possible reason so many people go to therapy...but I can't afford therapy. Therefore, I blog. ;) LOL.

  • Most blogs give opinions about their friends, colleagues, bosses, etc. Obviously, you wouldn't want your boss to know...
